Being the capable but cynical woman I am, I have never attracted romantic men. In fact, while indulging in the dating game all those years ago, I would have been uncomfortable with a man who bought me flowers or whispered sweet nothings. Any attempt at romance would have been met with derision, or at worst, sarcasm.
Here’s the conundrum. In my book, a man who is romantic while dating is untrustworthy. Once a man can be trusted, I want him to be romantic. I fully accept that this is unreasonable.
However a man can surprise a girl. Whizz and I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary last week and here are our cards (remember I’ve been laid up with a broken foot). His first:

Anyway, this got me thinking and I decided that despite a longing for a surprise birthday weekend, I still don’t trust romance. What love brings is trust, admiration, respect, humour and caring.

Sounds frothy to me. Give me tolerance and laughter any day.
